The main benefit of being an ASTW member, and the main reason travel industry professionals join the ASTW, is to align with an organisation that is regarded as the absolute authority in travel industry media. The members of the highly regarded and well-established Australian Society of Travel Writers (now in its 44th year) include public relations professionals as well as travel writers, publishers, photographers, digital influencers, and radio and television broadcasters who are dedicated to promoting travel both domestically and internationally.
In addition to being sought after as industry professionals, ASTW members are given the opportunity to enter the annual ASTW Awards of Excellence, which are open to members only, and meet and network with like-minded travel writer and PR members at regular ASTW events.
There has been a strong focus on professional development this year, with members sharing their expertise in a wide range of disciplines as part of our free webinar series. Topics have covered a range of themes, and members have been encouraged to request sessions that interest them. Our annual conference also offers talks, workshops and debates by experts in their field.
The ASTW is the preeminent society for travel writers in Australia. Members receive a membership card and ASTW logos to use in their email correspondence and on their websites.
Despite extraordinarily tough circumstances, the committee is working hard behind the scenes to deliver a great, subsidised conference this year. We are also discussing tenders for conventions in 2021 and 2022.
Members also have access to our private ASTW Facebook page and ‘members only’ section of the website (where webinar recordings are stored). Our virtual drinks hosted on the Zoom platform are a way of engaging with members in different cities and states. Once restrictions have been lifted, subsidised lunches will be held again in capital cities, giving members the opportunity to socialise and develop professional networks with others in the industry. Our fun and famously competitive Trivia Night will resume next year.
ASTW writer and digital influencer members receive automatic membership of TravMedia and confirmed attendance (space permitting) at its annual International Media Marketplace (IMM). Writer and influencer members benefit from our partnership with Travmedia through generous lunch sponsorships in every city. Writer members can apply for funding of up to $500 per delegate for the convention. TravMedia has also partnered with us in hosting our webinar series.
The annual ASTW Awards of Excellence are open to members only, giving them the opportunity to showcase their work and compete in a variety of categories for lucrative prizes. Following a review into the 2019 awards, the ASTW committee is currently revamping this year’s event to ensure it is even more rigorous and prestigious than before.
This year, all members were automatically admitted into the Global Travel Media Alliance (GTMA), where they were given the opportunity to compete among their counterparts from the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) and the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW) in the inaugural Global Travel Media Awards (GTMA).
Our regular events provide the opportunity to meet and network with like-minded travel writer and PR members at ASTW events.
There are regular ASTW lunches in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, subsidised by a travel industry sponsor. There’s an annual Trivia Night (usually held in Sydney) and a Wine & Wickets cricket day between writers and PRs.
ASTW members have access to the full membership list on the ASTW website. This list is not available to non-members because of privacy legislation.
The ASTW website’s members-only area offers several benefits, including:
Search the entire membership database to find members who have travelled to or specialise in a particular destination, write for particular publications or represent clients you are looking to contact
See, register and pay online for ASTW events, such as lunches, seminars and the AGM.
Resources for members about travel writing and PR, such as how to run a small business, how to more effectively communicate with the media (for PRs), photography workshops and websites, and more.
The ASTW newsletter is emailed to members and posted on the ASTW website after each committee meeting – usually about 6-8 times a year – and keeps members up to date with coming events, awards and other items of interest.
