How to apply to join the ASTW

Membership Categories

Full Writer members are writers, broadcasters or photographers who:
1.1 are the designated travel editor or broadcaster for a publication, website or station of considerable repute, or
1.2 write, broadcast or photograph professionally in a freelance capacity to an extent that satisfies the ASTW committee (see below for more details).

Associate Writer members are part-time writers whose output of work is less than that of Full members. Associate writers who are engaged in professionally producing a sufficient volume of travel content to warrant Associate membership must produce at least 7,000 travel-related words a year.

Note: All new writer members, except editors, will initially be considered as Associate writer members. Their membership status is then reviewed during the substantiation process in April the year after they join, to determine if they qualify for Full writer membership.

Public Relations members act on behalf of an airline, tour operator, national tourist office, hotel or other recognised travel industry organisation and must have been in their current position for at least six months to be eligible for membership. PR members applying must provide two ASTW writer or associate writer members as referees that can vouch for their PR activity within the travel and tourism sector if required.

Digital Travel Influencers * new in 2016/17 Digital Travel Influencers are leaders within their communities with powerful social network and industry-wide credibility across digital platforms including, but not limited to, blogs and Instagram

Friends of the ASTW
This category is for members who have different things happening in their lives – maybe they are travelling, undertaking study but still involved in the travel industry. Friends of the ASTW receive many of the benefits including a membership card each year, access to the STW website and closed facebook page along with invites to events. Friends of the STW may be drawn onto be a judge, buddy a new member to an event or even mentor a new member. Members are asked to substantiate each year by filling in the relevant form, all members as with all categories will be accessed at the substantiation meeting in May annually.

International Affiliate members

Existing ASTW members who move overseas may become an International Affiliate. They retain the voting rights and privileges of their original category. Other International Affiliates including, but not limited to, Australians working overseas who have not been ASTW members prior, may be admitted as determined by the Committee and will have rights and privileges similar to those of Associate members.

SUBSTANTIATION

All members must substantiate by 30 April. Substantiation guidelines are as follows for writers and PR members.

Substantiation guidelines for:

Full writer members:

Full writer members must write a minimum of 20,000 travel-related words a year and can only use work for which they were paid. Full writer members should include a list of published travel articles, an employer’s letter or a link to a website and provide a word count. *Tip – members can keep track of published work by loading stories onto TravMedia.

Travel Photographers must also provide evidence of published work, with each published image worth 200 words.

Associate Writer members:

Associate writer members must write a minimum of 7,000 travel-related words a year and can only use work for which they were paid. Associate Writers should include a list of published travel articles, an employer’s letter or a link to a website and provide a word count.

Digital Travel Influencer members:

To substantiate in the Digital Travel Influencers category, bloggers must provide Google Analytics data proving a minimum of 10,000 unique visitors over the previous three consecutive months, must show a minimum of 25 travel-related posts or a minimum 20,000 travel-related words in the previous year and must have a reference from at least one travel related PR or brand they have worked with on a campaign/trip/famil.

Instagrammers must maintain over 100,000 followers and show evidence of a minimum of 125 travel-related posts over the 12 months with a reasonable level of engagement. Photos count as 200 words. YouTubers must also maintain over 100,000 subscribers and show evidence of a minimum of 12 travel-related videos. Instagrammers and YouTubers must also must have a reference from at least one travel related PR or brand they have worked with on a campaign/trip/famil.

Public Relations members:

There are three components required for PR substantiation;

  1. PR members must name the travel-oriented company they are employed by, or if they are working as freelance consultants, their travel clients.
  2. Provide six pieces of coverage that have been generated as a result of their PR activity.
  3. Provide two ASTW writer or associate writer members as referees that can vouch for their PR activity within the travel and tourism sector if required.

Joining fee:

The fee to join the ASTW is $175. Once approved, the annual membership fee is $199.
