Pre Famil 2 – Cook, Eat, Sip, Repeat

Calling all master chefs, this famil is for you. Our trip starts with a cooking school at Nu Nu Restaurant in Palm Cove, where celebrity chef Nick Holloway (incidentally who appeared on the 2015 series of MasterChef) will put us through our Asian-cooking paces. Fuelled by the fruits of our labour, we’ll continue north to Port Douglas in time for sunset, where we’ll work up an appetite with a sail around the very spot the rainforest meets the reef. Dinner will be served at Port Douglas’ new-kid-on-the-block, Harrisons, with just one catch – you’ll have to cook it first. Enter your second cooking school of the day, where you’ll learn what goes behind Harrisons award-winning modern Euro-Brit menu. Take it from us, the only thing you’ll want to pack is your stretchy pants and mumu for this famil’s taste of the tropics.

Wednesday 16th of October

AM: Follow the palm tree road

After arriving into the Cairns Airport mid-morning, follow the palm trees from Cairns to Palm Cove, 30 minutes north of the Cairns CBD. Your destination is Nu Nu, the award-winning restaurant that dishes up Tropical North Queensland on a plate. This restaurant doesn’t just pay lip service to having ocean-front views – you’ll want to keep your phone set to panorama to capture views over the Coral Sea and Double Island which you’ll have from every table.

Today we’ll be cooking up a feast starring local produce before sitting down to eat a tasting menu that eliminates the need to split hairs over which main will be better – the pineapple & turmeric curry of wild ginger pork belly or the cinnamon roasted Victorian lamb with caramelised Mungalli yoghurt.

PM: Swap Palm Cove for Port Douglas

Fuelled by a morning of eating, we’ll continue our journey 40 minutes north to the resort playground of Port Douglas. We’ll have a moment of downtime between checking into Oaks Lagoons.

In your downtime you might like to make the most of the resort’s position with a walk along Four Mile Beach. You might want to walk up an appetite for dinner at Salsa Port Douglas, just sayin’.

Thursday 17th of October

AM: Snorkel a new way

Not all snorkelling is done on the reef. This morning join Back Country Bliss for a River Drift Snorkel through the Daintree Rainforest. You won’t be seeing tropical fish, but wildlife will be in abundance. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles who frequent these crystal-clear streams.

PM: Recharge your batteries the Port Douglas way

Port Douglas didn’t earn its reputation of being a resort capital of the north by being go, go, go all the time. Do what holidaymakers do best up here, enjoy lunch and an afternoon of leisure.

Sunset: Sail the seas

We’ll board Aquarius Sail’s luxury catamaran which launches from Port Douglas’ Reef Marina in time for sunset, passing through Dickson Inlet before cruising out to sea for an hour and a half on the water.

Don’t fill up on cheese and charcuterie, you’re enjoying dinner and a cooking school at Harrisons tonight. Tonight, you’ll be treated to a cooking class and demonstration.

Friday 18th of October

AM: Start by saluting the sun

After this famil, you’ll never look at your yoga studio the same way. This morning we’ll be saluting the sun from Rex Smeal Park, with a yoga lesson under its famous palm trees. After breakfast, we’ll check out of our digs and transfer back to Cairns for a mid-morning arrival.
