Post Famil 5: Unique Temple, Hill Tribe Culture and Dramatic Highlands

August 19, 2018 - August 21, 2018

- Free

Located 3-hour drive north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai offers a more relaxing feel with several historical and cultural attractions of its own, such as the White Temple, Mae Fah Luang Art & Culture Park. Chiang Rai is also known for its beautiful mountain ranges, home to Thailand’s largest ethnic hill-tribes i.e. Akha, Karen, Hmong, Lisu, etc.

Once Southeast Asia’s centre of opium production and drug smuggling, the Royal Project under the late Princess Mother – Princess Srinagarindra (also called “Mae Fah Luang” by the local), has carried out development activities to raise the quality of life of the country’s ethnic minorities in the area. These activities encompassed the reforestation of watershed areas and the development of various social enterprises to benefit local people in a sustainable way. Nowadays the area produces one of the best tea, coffee, pineapple and cool.

PM: Singha Park: a family-friendly attraction, suitable for visitors of all ages. There’s an electric tram which carries visitors to various parts of the park e.g. fruit orchards, tea plantations, zoo. Here visitors can pick their own fruit and vegetables or simply enjoy the walking trails through the meadows. For something more adventurous, zip lining and wall climbing are both available.

The White Temple or Wat Rong Khun: a very unique temple and is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist attractions. The temple was built and self-funded by Thai artist, Chaloemchai Khositphiphat. The exterior and interior architecture of the temple is designed in a contemporary and unconventional style, reflecting the wicked human nature. For example, inside the temple, the decor swiftly moves from pristine white to fiery and bewildering. Murals portray demon faces, missed with idols such as Michael Jackson, Neo from The Matrix, Freddy Kruger, Harry Potter, Superman, and Hello Kitty.
