Sunday 20 August (Note – strictly subject to weather conditions)
Requirements: only for strong swimmers – we will reserve this strictly for members who are planning to swim with whales (if you are subject to seasickness or are not confident in the water, please do not apply)
Associate/partner rate: $120
August is the peak time for whale watching and Sunshine Coast’s Sunreef has pioneered “swimming with whales”. The opportunity to swim with a humpback whale is a rare and very special one – something that people who have experienced it have described as ‘life changing’. Despite being one of the largest of mammals in our oceans, humpback whales are so graceful and gentle – they are incredibly trusting of human beings, but they don’t stop for a chat, so you need to be ready to make the most of the moment.
Sunreef’s vessels leave from Mooloolaba harbour and while every day is different on the water, and every encounter is unique, you are likely to see whales and dolphins on your journey. The whale watching and swimming trips are approximately four hours in duration, with each trip catering for up to 20 participants. Sunreef provides all participants with wetsuits and snorkelling equipment required for the adventure. Participants are also fully briefed on the boat about what to expect from the experience.
- This cruise is totally weather dependent. We will know whether the cruise is to go ahead the day before. While I’d like to be able to control the waves, that’s one thing that’s (currently) beyond my powers!
- First priority goes to full members because of the very strictly finite number of places – 20. First come, first serve. Associates and partners will be offered places on a space available basis.
- Please also note that if you are likely to over-indulge during the ASTW awards night, a four hour open seas cruise might not be a suitable experience – please consider before applying as seats are limited and we have had a very strong response).
- Swimming with Whales cannot be done by anyone undertaking post-Convention tours because they leave on Sunday morning. For full members a few places may also be available on Thursday 17, Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 August – contact Peter Hook. Note, these are also weather dependent so no guarantee can be made with these cruises.
