Thank you for your enquiry regarding membership of the Australian Society of Travel Writers.
Membership is divided into the categories of Full member & Associate Media member and Public Relations member.
Full members are those writers, broadcasters or photographers who: (a) are the designated travel editor or broadcaster for a publication or station of considerable repute; or (b) write, broadcast or photograph professionally in a freelance capacity to an extent that satisfies the Committee.
Associate Media members are part-time writers who must be engaged in professionally producing a sufficient volume of travel matter to warrant membership.
Note: it is a convention of the ASTW that all new writer members - apart from editors - become Associate members at the time of acceptance. Their membership status is then reviewed during the substantiation process in April each year.
Public Relations Members should act on behalf of a carrier, national tourist office, hotel or other recognised travel industry organisation. You will need to have been in your present management role for at least six months to be eligible for membership.
Applications must be accompanied by support material showing evidence of your role over the past six months. e.g. copies of articles, statements by employers or other material to aid the committee to reach its decision. Please note that this material is non-returnable. Your sponsors will be asked to return sponsorship forms to the ASTW Secretariat. Your sponsors must have known you for at least 12 months. If you are in doubt please contact the ASTW Secretariat.
The Committee meets approximately six times per year to consider new applications. No correspondence or discussion of decisions will be entered into by the ASTW Committee.
Please note: Once your application has been considered by the Committee, your details are published in our newsletter to allow any member who may wish to comment on your application to do so prior to receiving final confirmation of your membership status. As the Committee generally meets bi-monthly, it can often take 4-6 months for your application to be fully processed. Please be patient. Once your membership has been confirmed, you will hear from us within seven days of your membership being approved.
Cost of membership (including GST) is $297.00 for Full and Associate Media members, comprising $110.00 joining fee and $187.00 annual membership fee, including Breakaway Travel Club membership, and $275.00 for Public Relations Members, comprising $110.00 joining fee and $165.00 annual membership fee.
